Caribou likely to enjoy white Christmas

CARIBOU, Maine — With 13 inches of snow on the ground in Caribou on Dec. 12, America’s most northeastern city is on track to receive another white Christmas this year.

According to a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Caribou, any instance of an inch or more of snow on the ground constitutes a “white Christmas,” a criteria Caribou has met every year since 2011. However, the city was below one inch in 2010.

The total amount of snow has varied over the years. Last year, for example, Caribou had 18 inches of snow on the ground on Dec. 25, but in 2015 the city only had three.

While Bangor isn’t incredibly far from Caribou, the community has received significantly less snow during the holiday season and has had a total of five white Christmases since 2010. However, even during those five instance, the snow total was always in the single digits.

Currently, the Caribou National Weather Service reports only a “trace” of snow on the ground in Bangor, far less than an inch, and no snow in Portland.
