6 advance in Elks foul shooting contest

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks, Lodge No. 1954, held its Elks Hoop Shoot foul shooting contest for 8-13-year-old youths at the Wieden Hall gymnasium of the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, Dec. 29.  

William Sewall, Hoop Shoot director for the Elks, announced the following winners:

In the boys’ 8-9-year-old division, the winner was Cruze Casavant of Presque Isle, who had advanced to the lodge shootout after winning his foul shooting contest at Zippel School. The runner-up was Jacob Edgecomb of Limestone.

Blayne Tardif of Mapleton won in the girls 8-9-year-old division. She had previously won for her age group at Mapleton Elementary School. Elizabeth Robbins, who had won in her age group in Caribou, finished second.

Branden Porter was the winning boy in the 10-11-year-old age group. He had previously won the Mapleton Elementary School competition. Killian Deschaine of Zippel School in Presque Isle was the runner-up.

In the girls’ 10-11-year-old division, Ainsley Caron had the high score. She had previously captured her local competition in Caribou. Finishing in second place was Madison Oakes of Mapleton Elementary School.

Wesley LaPointe, who had won in his age group at Caribou Middle School, took first in the 12-13-year-old age group. Owen Sweeney, who had advanced to the lodge finals after winning at Easton, was second.

The winner of the girls’ 12-13-year-old division was Jorja Maynard, who represented Presque Isle Middle School. The runner-up was Anna Oliver, who previously won at her school in Hodgdon.

According to Sewall, the six winners from the Presque Isle Elks’ Hoop Shoot will now advance to the Maine North District competition, to be held on Sunday, Jan. 6, at the James F. Doughty School in Bangor. The six will compete for the right to participate in the Maine Elks State Championship on Jan. 27, also to be held in Bangor.

Tardif was the district and state champion in 2018 and LaPointe captured the district title last year.
