FORT KENT, Maine — Vice President Ben Paradis welcomed members of the Aroostook Retired Educators Association to Fort Kent on July 30, and noted the sharing of friendships and memories prior to the meeting.
After the delicious noon meal, he introduced Suzanne Paradis, town manager of Fort Kent, who highlighted events of the 150th anniversary of the town and 100th anniversary of the fire department.
She then focused her talk on out-migration and encouraged retired educators to talk to young people and make them aware of career opportunities in the area. She also discussed a marketing program involving towns along the Route 1 corridor, from Fort Kent to Key West, Florida.
Bob White introduced the remembrance ceremony for those educators who had passed away during the school year and noted the inclusion of cafeteria workers, janitors and bus drivers who are also major contributors to the education of youngsters.
The slate of officers for the 2019-2021 term of office was presented by Betsy York. Election will take place at the Aug. 27 meeting and the installation of officers will be held on Oct. 1.
New member Ina St. Jean was introduced. Pat Dow won the $25 cash door prize. Ina St. Jean won the remembrance ceremony floral bouquet.
The next meeting will be held at the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center on Aug. 27 with speaker Penny Kern of Seniors Achieving Greater Education and entertainment by Brian Mosher.
