AUGUSTA, Maine — The state’s annual moose hunting permit lottery, a popular affair usually held at various locations around the state, will go virtual for the first time starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 3.
The permit drawing takes place from 1 to 4:30 p.m. By visiting this link, spectators can watch online as Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife staff announce the lucky recipients of a 2020 Maine moose hunting permit. Those who miss the live virtual drawing will be able to see the results online at 6 p.m. June 13 at mefishwildlife.com.
Going along with the festivities, those interested can view the webinar Studying and Managing Maine’s Moose at 11 a.m. June 13. Maine’s moose biologist Lee Kantar will discuss the status of Maine’s moose population, the adaptive management study, how winter tick are threatening moose, and the next steps.
In addition, moose permit holders and their hunting partners are encouraged to listen to a panel discussion series, Maine’s Iconic Moose, to learn how to best prepare for their hunt of a lifetime, including how to get the moose out of the woods and what equipment they will need, moose behavior, how to properly care for the meat, and more.
Each panel will feature expert MDIFW staff, experienced Registered Maine Guides and industry representatives. Information and Education Director Emily MacCabe will moderate the panel discussions and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Sessions are as follows.
Moose Hunt Preparation: Thursday, June 25, 1 p.m. A discussion about essential gear, preparation for the hunt, and the benefits of hiring an experienced Registered Maine Guide or outfitter.
Moose hunting 101: Thursday, July 9, 1 p.m. A discussion and demonstration on how to gain new hunting skills. Learn how to master calling, about moose behavior and pre-season scouting.
Avoiding Moose Hunting Pitfalls: Thursday, July 23, 1 p.m. A discussion about enjoying a safe hunt and a review of important moose hunting laws/rules.
Field Care: Thursday, Aug. 6, 1 p.m. A discussion about the importance of proper field care, essential gear and tools, learning how to field dress, and the responsibility of meat care.
