Joins Houlton Pioneer Times — Bernard Esters, recently graduated from Colby College, has accepted a position on the reportorial staff at the Houlton Times.
100 Years Ago – July 14, 1921
New chairman — Mrs. S.L. White has been appointed as chairman for Southern Aroostook of the road improvement program being sponsored throughout the state by the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Rotarian takes the helm — P.L. Rideout this week took over his duties as the new President of the Houlton Rotary Club.
75 Years Ago – July 10, 1946
To select queen — At the monthly meeting of the Katahdin Valley Seed Association held in Island Falls it was voted to have a free banquet at the annual meeting July 13 and invited all its members and their wives. At this meeting, the association decided to promote and sponsor a “Queen” for Katahdin Valley, who would represent the Association and the Katahdin Valley at the Potato Blossom Festival in Houlton on July 27.
New ownership of Crescent Park — Crescent Park, a popular resort at Nickerson Lake for the past 40 years, changed hands last week, when it was purchased by James E. Cleary and Lloyd Murphy, both veterans of World War II, from J. Max Russell. The new owners have already taken over the mgmt.
50 Years Ago – July 14, 1971
Circus coming — Friday is Circus Day in Houlton as the town prepares for the arrival of an authentic European Three-Ring-Circus. Gray Circus will be performing two shows in the Community Bank lot featuring acrobats, clowns and animals. The event is being sponsored by the Houlton Jaycees.
Train — Residents of Southern Aroostook witnessed an unusual sight this week as a passenger train traveled through The County. The train was a special coach established by Bangor and Aroostook Railroad to show some of their new equipment to the press. The train stopped in Houlton on its way to Fort Kent.
25 Years Ago – July 10, 1996
Denture maker leads charge for new profession — A Houlton man is spearheading a drive to create a new profession in Maine. Richard Dhuy, a denture maker, is leading a group of 20 colleagues in the formation of a state organization to oversee the development of the soon to be recognized profession of denture makers.
Midnight Madness a huge success — The 10th Annual Midnight Madness was held Wednesday July 3, and drew one of the largest crowds in the history of the event. People were out early to enjoy a lobster feed put on by Aroostook Seafood in the KeyBank parking lot and stayed late to shop in the stores throughout town and enjoy the musical entertainment.
