WASHBURN, Maine — The Southern Aroostook boys varsity basketball team defeated Washburn, 87-37, Friday, Dec. 10, in a season opener for both squads.

For Southern Aroostook, Dylan Burpee led the team with 29 points, followed by Hunter Burpee with 25; Ethan Collier added 11; Camden Porter and Trafton Russel both contributed six; Brennan Burpee chipped in five; and Drake Weston added four.

“With the first game of the year, you never know what to expect,” said Southern Aroostook coach Brett Russell. “The kids came out and played hard, and I was happy with their effort today. They moved the ball around well and looked around and that is what we aim to do this year.”

The Warriors came out aggressive, and were able to maintain a lead over the Beavers throughout the game. The first quarter ended with Southern Aroostook at a 24-point lead, 30-6. By halftime, Southern Aroostook had gained another 25 points, as Washburn worked hard to close the gap down, 55-19.

The Warriors continued their assault, gaining another 19 points in the third quarter, but Washburn refused to quit, keeping pace with 19 points of their own to end the quarter at 74-32.

However, the Warriors didn’t give an inch, and added another 13 points to the score while Washburn added 5, ending the first game of the season in favor of Southern Aroostook, 87-37.

For Washburn, Beckam Vaughn led the team with 23 points, Mitch Turner contributed 10, and Parker Corey added 4.

“It was a rough game as the final score shows,” said Washburn Coach Michael Hartford. “We know that there is a lot that we need to work on, but there were alot of good things that happened here compared to our preseason scrimmages. We are getting a lot better defensively from halfcourt situations of being able to switch and help.”
