115 Years Ago – March 6, 1907

Races underway — The relay races at the Kink last week were very interesting. Carpenter won against his four opponents, and in the hurdle races Thomas Golden took first prize and George Cyr second.

The race between Law and Adams on Friday night was won by Law by about two feet, which made it very exciting.

Close game of basketball —  A very close game of basket hall was played in Wording hall last Friday evening when the Ricker girls defeated Island Falls High school by a score of 7 to 2. Not until time was called, however, was it certain who would win. Referees Bishop and Verrill. Time, 15-minute halves. These two teams will meet at the R. C. L exhibition in the Heywood Opera house, Wednesday evening.

75 Years Ago – Feb. 27, 1947

Noyes store sold — One of Southern Aroostook’s best known retail grocery stores changed hands this week, when the Earl V. Noyes establishment at Smyrna Mills was told to a partnership composed of Hayward E. A. Dunphy and Joseph W. Edwards, both of Island Falls, The new owners will take possession March 1.

Town manager resigns — Mr. Dunphy resigned his position as town manager of Oakfield and Dyer Brook effective last night. He has served the former town for eight years and the later for five. Mr.Edwards, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Edwards of Island falls, is a veteran of more than three years service in World War Two, part of which was overseas. He received his honorable discharge about a year ago. The store, which has been conducted by Mr. Noyes for the past 23 years and which has been twice burned out in that time, will have its names changed to Dunphy and Edwards.

Prizes and trophies awarded — The Elks’ bowling team made a clean sweep of the roll-offs held last week to win undisputed possession of the Recreation Bowling League Championship for the season. The strong Elks’ team swept the first match for 154 pins and four points for on the second match. Cecil Jenkins kept the Casey’s in the match by his bowling both nights, but the Elks’ team, sparked by their lead-off man, Don Taylor, were never in trouble during the competition.

50 Years Ago – March 1, 1972

Treasurer for Tri-Hi-Y Council — Miss Mary Ann Millar, a Houlton HIgh School junior, was elected treasurer of the Northeast District Hi-Y-Tri-Hi-Y Council during the marathon winter rally held recently at Presque Isle High School. Mary Ann is a member of one of the three Hi-Y and Tri Hi-Y clubs that are affiliated with the Houlton High School, the Northeast District YMCA and the Maine State YMCA and will serve as treasurer of the Northeast District YMCA Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y council for 1972-73. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Millar of Pleasant Street.

Fire cleans out old stables — An early Friday morning blaze has completely destroyed the horse stables at Community Park, and has furthered the reconstruction program in that area. The pre-dawn blaze leveled the old wooden structure that has not been used for some time except for storage of equipment for the Parks and Recreation Department. Town Manager Tom WIllard said that the Town still owed $2,480 plus interest.

25 Years Ago – March 12, 1997

Something wonderful —  March 12, 1997 marks the 85th birthday of Girl Scouts of the USA, founded by Juliette Gordon Low of Savannah, Georgia. Juliette Low brought the idea of scouting from England. When she arrived in Savannah, she called her friend and said, “I have got something wonderful for the girls of Savannah.” She was so excited, full of enthusiasm and anxious to start a troop. Juliette gathered 12 girls together for the first troop meeting on March 12, 1912. Her niece Daisy, was the first registered member.

Marker restoration gets boost — A civic project initiated by students at the Houlton High School got a big financial boost this week from state veterans. During councilors comments at Monday’s regular meeting of the Houlton town council, councilor Dorothy Donahue announced that the Maine chapter of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) has offered to help fund the restoration of the memorial crosses on Solider’s Hill.
