Artist Holub will host drawing class

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Aroostook Agency on Aging will host a basic pencil sketching class with John Holub of Westfield from 4-5 p.m . on Friday, May 6, as part of the First Friday Art Walk.

The free lesson is open to all ages and will take place at the agency’s office at 260 Maine St. in Presque Isle.

Holub first started creating from his Westfield studio offering pen-and-ink renderings. Now, he paints in watercolor, gauche and oil with an occasional pen-and-ink in the mix. Holub has painted in Italy, the Caribbean, Georgia and Florida to name a few locations, and he continues to paint Maine’s woods and waters.

Students are invited to bring their own art supplies, but a sketch pad and pencils will also be provided for those interested in the free drawing lesson. All participants are required to be screened for COVID-19 and wear a mask.

The agency’s Artists for Aging gallery space will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Friday and will feature Holub’s artwork he has worked on over the winter months.

“We wanted to create an atmosphere where people could come and visit,” said Joy Barresi Saucier, the agency’s executive director. “As an added incentive to drop by, we have offered our expansive wall space to local artists who wish to showcase their creations. Those who take part in our Artists for Aging  program dedicate a percentage of all sales to support Agency programs and services.”

“The Artists for Aging program will offer area artists of all ages the opportunity to help promote art and support fellow artists here at Agency on Aging. What a great opportunity,” Holub said.

Sponsored by the Central Aroostook Area Chamber of Commerce, First Friday Art Walks are scheduled each month throughout the year to showcase Presque Isle’s creative spirit. Participating venues include Wintergreen Arts Center, the Common Gallery, Turner Memorial Library, the University of Maine at Presque Isle Reed Gallery and others.
