HOULTON, Maine – Personnel with the Aroostook Agency on Aging celebrated Older Americans Month last month with visits to all parts of northern Maine. This year’s theme “Age My Way” focused on how older adults can age in their communities, living independently for as long as possible and participating in ways they choose.
In southern Aroostook County, members of the Agency’s long-term services and education/outreach teams hosted three events in May – one in Danforth, another in Houlton and the last one in Hodgdon. The purpose of the visits was to introduce employees from the Agency and allow them to informally discuss programs and services that are available to help older persons live independently in their own home community. It was also a social opportunity to share a cup of coffee and light conversation, something that has been unable to happen during most of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Coffee Time Gang of Danforth hosted a recent Meet and Greet informational session with representatives from the Aroostook Agency on Aging. Joy Barresi Saucier, the agency’s executive director, said there are various meaningful ways individuals, service clubs and communities can help all residents age successfully.
“Older adults play vital, positive roles in our communities – as family members, friends, mentors, volunteers, civic leaders, members of the workforce, and more. Just as every person is unique, so too is how they age and how they choose to do it – and there is no ‘right way’”, she added.
