Undefeated Schenck boys overwhelm Wisdom in D North action

BANGOR – The undefeated and top-seeded Schenck High School boys basketball team from East Millinocket scored the game’s first 10 points and never looked back en route to a 74-21 Class D North quarterfinal win over undermanned ninth seed Wisdom of St. Agatha at the Cross Insurance Center on Monday morning.

Schenck, 19-0, will take on 17-2 Katahdin of Stacyville in Wednesday’s 8:30 p.m. semifinal at the Cross Insurance Center.

The teams did not meet during the regular season.

Wisdom, which had just six players, wound up 7-13.

Senior guard Mason McDunnah had the game’s first seven points off a 3-pointer and two dunks off his own steals. He then passed to sophomore guard Brayden Osborne for an open 3-pointer.

Schenck forced 10 turnovers in the first period off its aggressive half-court trap and led 22-3 after the first period.

The Wolverines expanded the lead to 36-6 at the half.

“We played pretty good. We had a couple ups and downs but our energy was there. We played good defense which is something we strive for,” said McDunnah, who finished with a game-high 23 points, including four dunks.

He also had seven rebounds and four steals.

“I was proud of the effort. It was a good team win,” said Schenck coach Aaron Hutchins. 

Ten Wolverines scored at least four points.

Junior forward Samuel Jacobs had 11 points off the bench. Sophomore forward Gage Brown produced eight points and three rebounds. Sophomore guard Trafton Morrison had seven points, senior center Brady McAvoy had six points and sophomore guard Brayden Osborne scored five points.

Osborne also had five steals, three assists and three rebounds. Freshman forward Owen Wyman had five rebounds, two blocked shots and four points. Junior forward Gavin Gagnon and freshman forward Caleb Peavey also had four points and Gagnon hauled down six rebounds.

Impressive junior point guard Camden Pelletier paced Wisdom with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Freshman guard Tanner Marquis had three points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior guard Landon Picard and freshman forward Joshua Theriault each had a basket. Picard also had four rebounds.

Sophomore forward Sam Tardif grabbed eight rebounds, blocked two shots and had a free throw.
