99 Years Ago – April 2, 1925

Hume consented to be a candidate for commander of V.F.W. — Col. Frank M. Hume consented to be a candidate for department commander V.F.M., at the State Encampment in Portland. Col. Hume was born in Bridgewater and enlisted in the National Guard in 1893, serving continuously till mustered out in 1919. He served in Cuba during the Spanish-American War with the First Maine Artillery; as Colonel of the Second Maine Infantry on the Mexican Border, and as Colonel of the 26th Division from Sept. 25, 1917, to April 16, 1919.

50 Years Ago – April 3, 1974

Local FFA team took the State Championship — The Presque Isle FFA basketball team took its second straight state championship Thursday, March 14, by defeating Limestone 103 to 29. They ended their season with 21 wins and 1 loss.The players were coached by their advisor, Paul Lynch. Captains were guards Terry Hafford, Bruce Michaud and Alan Perry. Other players were forward Greg Hafford, center Bob Tompkins, forward Keith Forbes, forward Gene Hafford, forward Bob Gagnon, guard Mike Gardiner, forward Danny Wright, guard Joel Macxy, center and forward Roger Campblell and guard Stewart Maxcy. The team’s only loss was to the Presque Isle J. V. team. Their 21 straight victories came against Lee Academy which they played four times.

Colton re-elected CAHS president — The Central Aroostook Humane Society held its annual meeting Thursday evening, March 28, at the Presque Isle REcreation building. John Walker served as moderator for the business meeting. Four directors were retained for a three year period, tThey were Mrs. Eleanor Hudson, Mrs. Jean Harding, Mrs. Nannette Colton and Mrs. Gloria Berube. John Colton continued to serve as president of the Humane Society for one more year, Sylvanis Davis as vice president; Gloria Berube, treasurer; Glenna Briggs, secretary; and David Griffiths, clerk.

Gould’s record keeper got a New England post — Mrs. Esther D. Green, registered record administrator and director of the A. R. Gould Hospital medical records department here, was appointed to the executive board of the New England Medical Records Conference, according to Victor E. Costanzo, hospital administrator. The conference was held in conjunction with the New England Hospital Assembly held at the Sheraton Plaza in Boston March 24 through 26. Mrs. Green was one of two persons appointed to the board to represent the State of Maine.

25 Years Ago – April 7, 1999

Ladner won a lifetime award — The Maine Arts Sponsors Association awarded their first Lifetime Achievement Award to Dan Ladner, teacher and director at the Caribou High School and the Performing Arts Center for his lifetime contributions to the performing arts in Maine. Rebecca Welsh, executive director of the performing arts agency, said the primary criteria for choosing Ladner for the honor was the work he had done to bring performing arts to the county and his tireless efforts to make people aware of the arts and their benefits. 

TAMC volunteers — TAMC volunteers Andy Vernon and Kelly Thibodeau, Presque Isle High School students, helped the Children’s Miracle Network raise funds earmarked for the purchase of a special incubator for The Aroostook Medical Center’s Women and Children’s Health service. TAMC partnered with Wal-Mart for the special event.

NHS Spring Convention — Presque Isle High School hosted the Aroostook County National Honor Society Spring Convention. The theme was “The Sky Is The Limit.” Businessmen and women from throughout the County shared their stories with honor society students, encouraging them to continue their education. Featured speakers were: Dr. Kurt Hoffmann, president of Northern Maine Technical College; Lucy Richard, certified nursing midwife and member of the SAD 1 Board of Directors; Bill Smythe, owner of Smythe’s IGA; Carl Theriault, owner of Valley Motors in Fort Kent; Galen Raymond, owner of Raymond Motors in Madawaska; Greg Cy from Loon Country Bottled Water in Garfield; and Robert Anderson from F.A. Peabody in Houlton.
