Spooky creatures abound in the woods during haunted walk at local farm

WOODLAND, Maine – There’s an old legend about Edgemore Woods, surrounding Whitmore & Edgecomb Family Farms in Woodland.

Many years ago, when the land was known as Cochran Farms, the souls of farm workers who disappeared without a trace became trapped within the tree line, said Candy Whitmore-Edgecomb, whose family now owns the farm.

At least, that’s what she wanted visitors to believe Friday night as they sat on hay barrels in the back of a trailer, as they were driven through hay fields, closer to those haunted woods.

“Once a year, all those souls come out to feed. They feed on our fear,” Whitmore-Edgecomb said.

Of course, everyone knew that those “souls” were just humans and animatronic creatures dressed as demonic clowns, chainsaw-wielding, pumpkin-headed people and the “spider queen.”

But that did not stop folks from screaming in fear, or perhaps fearful delight, as they wound through a 200-foot spider tunnel and many other attractions lurking in between the trees.

“It was just scary enough,” said Makaila Beck of Fort Fairfield, after surviving the walk with friends. “They definitely need to put more in there.”

Whitmore-Edgecomb and her family were the masterminds behind the Edgemore Woods walk, which began last year to an enthusiastic response.

Around 200 people total showed up last Halloween for the two-night event at the farm, located at 291 Thibodeau Road, so the family expanded this year’s festivities to four nights.

“We’re big on Halloween here, and we want to provide something for the community,” Whitmore-Edgecomb said.

The next Edgemore Woods haunted walks will take place Nov. 1 and 2 from 6 to 10 p.m.
