McDonald’s latest robbery victim – Two masked men armed with a shotgun robbed the fast food outlet of nearly $800 after closing time, near midnight on a Sunday in November of 1974. According to Madawaska police, the men handed written instructions to Don Cyr, restaurant manager, and ultimately locked Cyr and the firm’s employees in a restroom. Everyone remained in the rest room for nearly an hour, police said, before attempting to alert police at about 1:15 a.m. Recent robbery victims in the area also included Daigle’s Drug Store, and Phil’s Fruit Market.

At your service – Students in Rose Sullivan’s fourth and fifth grade classes at Grand Isle Elementary School have opened and are staffing a schoolwide post office. Students assigned each room in the school an address and have established a full service post office in their classroom, complete with post office boxes, stamps, clerks, a postmaster and delivery service. School officials say the project not only teaches the students about the operations of the US Postal Service, it encourages good writing habits. Sorting the day’s mail were students Natascha Ramirez and Heather Morrow.

Parishioners to rebuild the church — A historic Anglican and United church has been partially demolished and will be reconstructed following a September 2014 fire that destroyed most of the building. Anglican division treasurer James Coster said that parishioners at St. John the Baptist/St. Paul’s United Church in Edmundston, New Brunswick were able to save “a lot of minor things” but that most items of value were lost in the fire. The church bell and a large cross from the steeple were also saved and placed in storage, he said.
