50 Years Ago — January 15, 1975

  Fraser cuts back – Some 130 to 150 men will be laid off as the result of a three machine shutdown announced last week in January of 1975 by Fraser Paper Ltd. According to a news release issued by Lawrence Fyfe, director of public relations at Fraser Companies Ltd., “indications are that the present conditions will carry on well into February. Layoffs will be carried out according to the labor contract.”  Present conditions are a lack of orders which has caused the company to close Bond Machine 3 with no definite start up date.

25 Years Ago — January 12, 2000

Plourde family entertains seniors Edwina Plourde and the residents of Wisdom House in Madawaska were entertained by members of her family at their recent Christmas party. Plourde’s 15 children are all musicians and singers and were all present to perform for the seniors. The Plourdes also brought Christmas gifts for all Wisdom House residents. All seniors enjoyed their gifts and entertainment provided by the Plourdes.

Van Buren fire chief loses garage and workshop to fire — Van Buren Fire Chief Brian Caron lost a garage and workshop following a fire on Friday, Jan. 9, 2015. The fire scorched much of the interior and burned through the roof of the structure. The fire was “accidental in nature,” according to Tim Lowell, senior investigator with the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office. Cordless power tool rechargeable batteries caused the fire, Lowell said.  The garage, constructed in 2008, was used for woodworking, carpentry and other hobbies.
