Aroostook Mental Health Services Inc., also known as AMHC, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at Skyhaven Residential in Presque Isle on Aug. 18 to honor the community members who made the facility’s new gazebo possible.
“Staff members shared their vision to have a gazebo for the residents to enjoy,” said Michelle Ferris, AMHC chief operating officer. “It was made possible thanks to a generous donation of $2,500 by the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club, a $1,000 discount on materials by S.W. Collins, the construction of the gazebo by volunteer Frank Pytlak, and the support of Carol Ayoob, Skyhaven’s activity coordinator.”
Skyhaven is a 10-bed facility that offers a 24/7 structured and supportive living environment for adults 18 and older with serious mental illness. The home provides an opportunity for residents to achieve a higher level of functioning with a goal toward independent living in the community of their choice.
The gazebo sits next to a garden full of sunflowers and vegetables, helping to transform the lawn into a welcoming yard. This backdrop contributes to the well-being of residents, offering a space to be under cover and have a place to reflect, read a book and socialize.
With more than 60 years of dedicated service, AMHC is a major behavioral health nonprofit in northeastern Maine, operating 25 service locations across Aroostook, Hancock and Washington counties.
