PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — On Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954, will once again offer a free Veterans Day supper for all military veterans, current military service personnel and their spouses beginning at 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge located at 508 Main St.
In announcing the free Veterans Day supper Tina Dougherty, exalted ruler of the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954, stated that pursuant to a directive from the Elks Grand Exalted Ruler, all Elks Lodges throughout this country shall hold special events to honor our nation’s military veterans. November is Elks Veterans Remembrance Month.
“As long as there are veterans, the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954, will never forget them” is a principal precept of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, said Dougherty.
The menu for this year’s Elks Veterans Day dinner will include a wide variety of recipes featuring moose meat donated by the Maine Warden Service and trout donated by Mi’kmaq Farms. Included will be marinated moose steaks, moose chili, lasagna with moose meat, American chop suey with moose hamburger, shepherd’s pie with moose meat, moose stew and moose meatballs in an Italian sauce.
On account of the generosity of Mi’kmaq Farms, trout will be offered in a variety of recipes including pan-fried and baked trout, and fish chowder.
In addition to the numerous moose and trout recipes, chicken stew, seafood chowder, home baked beans, hot rolls and a variety of desserts will be served.
The Maine Warden Service has arranged for the donation of moose meat for this year’s Veterans Day supper, as an expression of the gratitude of the Maine Warden Service for our military veterans.
Similarly, Mi’kmaq Farms donated trout grown by them in order to express the gratitude of the tribe for the service of our veterans. A large percentage of the Mi’kmaq tribe are military veterans.
Veterans, active servicemen and their spouses will eat for free. A minimal charge of $5 per person will be charged for all other members of the public who wish to attend.
Veterans, including James “Sheldon” Wright and friends will share their musical talents with their fellow veterans and guests who attend this special supper.
Door prizes have been donated for veterans and all current military service personnel.
If transportation to the Elks Lodge for this event is needed, it can be arranged by calling the Presque Isle Elks at 207-764-0985.
