Strong showing for Houlton/GHCA at second meet of the season

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — On a competitive Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Athletic Complex, the Greater Houlton Track & Field team delivered an impressive performance against a seven-school field. Competing on a day that went from warm and sunny to overcast and cool, the Houlton/GHCA girls secured a third-place finish with 50 points while the boys team earned fourth overall with 56 points.

The meet featured a deep roster of Aroostook County talent, including host Presque Isle, Caribou, Fort Kent, Washburn, Fort Fairfield and the Maine School of Science and Mathematics.

The day was defined by two dominant athletes who led their respective Houlton/GHCA teams in scoring. For the girls, Andrea Ross was nearly untouchable, racking up an incredible 26 individual points. Ross captured first place in both the 3,200 (12 minutes, 20.71 seconds) and the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches), while adding a third-place finish in the 1,600. Her 3,200 time was a massive 31-second improvement compared to her season opener.

On the boys side James Brady led the Shires with 22 points, highlighted by two gold-medal performances. Brady uncorked a massive 147-08 throw to win the javelin, shattering his previous mark by over 12 feet. He followed that with a gritty first-place finish in the 1,600 (4:48.51), clocking a 16-second improvement from Brewer last week to lead a Houlton distance sweep.

The Shire distance squad proved to be the backbone of the boy’s team scoring. In the 1,600 Houlton athletes took four of the top six spots, with Nathan Brady (fourth), Wyatt Quint (fifth) and Logan Witmer (sixth) all crossing the line in rapid succession. Nathan Brady also secured a third place finish in the 3,200 (10:57.55).

Freshman Isaac Watson made an immediate impact, scoring 12 points for the Shires by taking second in the long jump (17-04.50) and fourth in the high jump. Micah Gilmour rounded out the boy’s scoring with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault.

For the girls team, Isabella McCarthy earned a podium spot with a third-place finish in the discus (78-03). April Mazur continued her consistency over the hurdles, taking third in the 100 hurdles (20.03 seconds) and sixth in the 400 dash.

The Shire racewalkers also added to the tally, with Faith Schools (fourth) and Hannah Kowalski (fifth) both scoring. Greta Kenney contributed five points with a fourth-place finish in the 400 and sixth in the 100 dash.

“Today was a showcase of the work these athletes have been putting in over the last few weeks,” said assistant coach Dyer. “To see some points coming in from some events we traditionally haven’t had any representation in is great.  We still have a lot to work on before the championship season.”
