To the editor:
On April 22, another naughty Trump letter found its way into the letters section of our favorite northern Maine weekly. Stephen Freeman again. Once again, he offered some one-sided views.
Freeman claimed that Trump, in a bow to Putin, stopped direct aid to Ukraine.
The fact is, Trump did stop “direct” aid to Ukraine. Instead, he is funneling billions of dollars to support the war in Ukraine through NATO. That isn’t exactly bowing to Putin.
Freeman also stated that Trump tried to bully Denmark into giving him Greenland. Actually, trying to get ahold of Greenland is nothing new for the U.S. The U.S. first expressed interest in purchasing Greenland in 1867. Secretary of State William H. Steward proposed buying Greenland during the purchase of Alaska. The U.S. in 1946 offered Denmark $900 million for Greenland. Trump proposed buying Greenland in 2019.
So, as you can see, trying to get control of Greenland goes back many years.
As far as Trump ousting the dictator in Venezuela and leaving the dictator’s cronies in charge, I guess we will just have to wait to see how that one works out.
On the same day Rob Kipp offered some views on left and right. He gave his opinions on what the difference is between the right and the left, but wasn’t very clear about the purpose of his commentary. Was he referring to the left being Democrats and the right being Republicans? If he was, then all I can say is, “Wrong.” If he was just referring to people in general, then all I have to say is, “Safe letter.”
