PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will serve as the Aroostook County location for the Maine Historical Society’s statewide viewing tour of the Declaration of Independence Dunlap Broadside.
Printed in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, and sent to the Colonies to announce American independence, this Declaration is one of 26 surviving copies of the Dunlap Broadside. From July to October, the Declaration will travel across all of Maine’s 16 counties.
The document will be on public display at UMPI’s Center for Innovative Learning on Friday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A commemorative event will be held Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. in UMPI’s Campus Center Multi-Purpose Room, featuring musical performances and reflections on America’s 250th anniversary, followed by a reception. These events are free and open to the public.
