Brewer talks of trip

The April meeting of the Mars Hill United Methodist Women was held in the church vestry on Monday, April 12, at noon, with 10 members and four guests present. Guests included: Mariah Brewer; her mother, Colleen Brewer; her grandmother, Cathy Mullen; and her grandmother, Judy Pryor, who was up from Cushing.
Following a blessing, a lunch of sandwiches from home was enjoyed by all, with dessert and drinks provided by co-hostesses Joan Boone and Joan Walsh. After an hour of socializing, President Elaine opened the meeting by welcoming everyone.
She then turned the meeting over to Program Chairman Joan Walsh. She introduced Mariah Brewer, a talented young sophomore at CAHS. Mariah spoke and showed pictures of her 10-day missions trip with members of the United Baptist Church to Camp Douglas in Massachusetts. She and several other students and adults spent their mornings conducting classes in Bible and Christian living with children from various housing projects in the nearby city. Afternoons were spent working on camp improvements, repairs, painting and yard work. Mariah was presented with a gift.
President Elaine opened the business meeting with all repeating the UMW Purpose Pledge and Prayer. Several responded with reports of their acts of kindness. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted as read. Treasurer Diane Ketchum reported that $425 was realized from the recent food sale during Winterfest. Thank-you notes were read from the library and the Winterfest Committee.
Joan Boone showed everyone the new yellow plastic tablecloths for the new round tables in the vestry.  Members voted to donate $100 to the two Methodist ministers who are going to Africa in July to set up and organize the building of an orphanage.
President Elaine reminded everyone that we would be hosting the Northern District UMW meeting on April 21. Committees were appointed and final plans were made. There will be a silent auction — the money going to the House of Comfort Hospice.
President Elaine announced there would be a baby shower in the church vestry on Saturday, April 24, for the Pregnancy Care Center. She had a list of necessary items.
After the benediction, the meeting was adjourned.
Members attending included: Elaine Bailey, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone, Donna Brewer, Ruth Sylvester, Alma Smith, Diane Ketchum, Frances Banks, Gladys Long and Clara Hussey.

Bridgewater Community Club

The Bridgewater Community Club will meet on Thursday, April 22, at Pat Lenentine’s at 7 p.m. All interested parties are encouraged to attend. The group welcomes ideas on town projects and fund-raisers.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, April 13, at 6:30 a.m. Rotarian Larry Fletcher took members on a trip down memory lane when he showed a number of pictures of the Mars Hill area from many years ago. It was fun to try to pick out what homes were still in use and to see the way that Main Street used to look.
Larry said that his garage is a great place to spend time if you want to know about yesteryear. He usually has a number of folks around that enjoy talking about the past.
