115 Years Ago – Feb. 3, 1903
Purchase — The purchase of the Northern Telegraph Company by the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad has been announced. It is likely that the telegraph office will be moved to the Vaughan House.
Rededicated — The Baptist Church has been rededicated after extensive alteration and remodeling. The Ladies’ Aid is using the new range acquired in The Republican contest.
100 Years Ago – Feb. 7, 1918
Cold — The temperature was 21 below on “heatless Monday.”
Serial — The serial “Gods of Mars” is now running in the Republican.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 3, 1943
Bewilderment — Tuesday was Candlemas/Groundhog Day, but the poor little fellow was so bewildered by the sun and clouds that he could not be sure whether he saw his shadow or not. It may be that he was unable to appear because of the snow and it would be appear that northern Aroostook will have at least six more weeks of winter.
Stamp champ — A special pin from the U.S Treasury was awarded to Marie Chappius, high school freshman, by Mrs. P.J. Sullivan of the County War Savings Committee in a special presentation ceremony at the high school last Friday for “outstanding merit” in conducting the War Stamp sale among school children. Miss Chappuis serves as a volunteer AWS observer at the local airport district twice a week, in addition to her stamp-selling duties.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 7, 1968
Shoplifting increase — Shoplifting is definitely on the increase and is becoming a very real problem in Caribou, according to the local police department, which has issued the warning that fines up to $100 or imprisonment for as much as six months for those who are apprehended. As many as five persons were apprehended by the local department Monday, the thefts involving articles worth anywhere from 39 cents to $2.25.
Piece de resistance — Club officials at the Caribou Sportsman’s Banquet released the full banquet menu. The year’s specialty will be barbecued wild boar, some 700 pounds of it. Other items listed include buttered Aroostook Mountain potatoes, Birds-Eye peas, buttered Cyr squash, green salad delight, homemade buttered rolls and dessert, a “Lions special.”
25 Years Ago – Feb. 3, 1993
Walmart opens — After months of preparation, the Presque Isle Walmart store officially marked its grand opening yesterday morning at 9 a.m. with a special ceremony and ribbon cutting. Various speakers included national and local store executives, as well as Presque Isle City Manager Tom Stevens. The company prevented several donations to local organizations, including the Temporary Shelter for the Homeless, the SAD Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), the United Way and the Boy Scouts.
Citizen of the Year — Daniel “Danny” Patterson, owner-operator of the Limestone IGA Foodliner, was named Limestone’s Citizen of the Year at the 50th Annual Limestone Chamber of Commerce-Rotary banquet Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Loring Officer’s Club. Former town manager Tom Stevens introduced this year’s Citizen of the Year. He described Patterson as unselfishly giving. Patterson is a 1967 graduate of Presque Isle High School.
