AUGUSTA, Maine — Lily Tedford, a senior at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone who hails from South Portland, interned in the Senate Democratic Office for her school’s January term. Tedford spent two weeks shadowing senators and staff, attending legislative sessions and hearings, and learning what senators and staff do every day in the State House on behalf of the people of Maine.
“Experiencing the Maine legislature in action and working in the Democratic Office has been incredible,” said Tedford. “I’ve gained a better understanding of how my state government works, and I think this internship has convinced me to run for public office one day.”
“Lily was extremely helpful during her time here,” said Sen. Troy Jackson, D-Allagash, who represents Limestone in the Senate. “We all benefitted from her intellect and willingness to jump in and do whatever was required. She has a very bright future ahead of her, and I certainly hope to see her back here in the State House someday.”
Tedford is a senior and recently completed her college applications. She is considering attending Bates College in Lewiston, Bowdoin College in Brunswick, or Colby College in Waterville, among a number of other schools.
The Senate Democratic Office’s internship program gives students an opportunity to work in the Senate and interact with legislators. Interns see what it is like to work supporting Senators in their work representing their constituents and ushering bills through the legislative process. Interns perform such duties as: working on pertinent research, collecting data, and attending legislative sessions.
