To the editor:
My heart is truly saddened by the closed doors at 23 North Street in Presque Isle formerly known as Smythe’s IGA. Bob Buckley, his family, and staff have served our community with great pride and dedication over the years. Walking into “Bob’s Store” was like stepping back into the local markets of days gone by. The days when your groceries were carried out to your car, deliveries were made to the homebound, the local meat cutter cut meats, and you were always greeted by name upon your arrival. If you were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Bob’s bald head – his laughter and sense of humor were sure to follow. He was sincerely concerned with your family and your personal well being in the midst of his long and busy days.
On behalf of the SAD 1 Music Boosters, we commend his loyalty and support of our organization. Our memorable Steak Barbecues will be missed by all of us who looked forward to those tasty tidbits of marinated meat. Bob not only graciously hosted this charity event but also personally assisted with the cooking along with his supportive staff. His contributions to the fund-raising efforts of our organization are sincerely appreciated and will be greatly missed.
On a personal level, I too, will miss the many “characters” of Mr. Bob Buckley including the “Kangaroo Chef”, the “Tea and Crumpet Lady”, the “Smoked Fiddlehead Warden”, the “Waterlogged Outboard Motor Racer”, the “Kind and Generous Community Spirit”, and most of all a “Treasured Friend”.
