HOULTON, Maine — Temperatures in Aroostook County soared to near 90 for the first time this season, just a few weeks after a foot of snow fell in the area.

With the scorching heat and humidity, many families were finding ways to beat the heat Wednesday either by playing in sprinklers or swimming in pools.

The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for north central Aroostook County until 3 p.m. Wednesday as a severe thunderstorm was located 8 miles southwest of Fort Kent, moving southeast at 20 mph.

The storm was capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail, according to the alert. Fort Kent, Eagle Lake, New Canada, Cross Lake, Wallagrass, Winterville, Guerette, Soldier Pond and Saint John were listed as the affected areas.
