From the Bunkers – Week of July 13, 2020

As I write this, the rain is coming down. It is good, we need it. The natural moisture is really helping the greens. We have worked on the seventh green and now we are working on the fifth.

All our efforts are starting to show positive results. I learned on the 18th green that we have to be a little patient with the mowing before we put it back to full playability. Better results with hole seven.

The Men’s Twilight League has reached the midpoint. Leading the Spieth Division is the team of Bob Gray and Jerry York. In the Koepka Division, the leaders are Jim Quirk and Ben Lynds. In the Ladies Association, 12 women played on Tuesday in a game called “Count your even holes.” Everyone had a fun time.

Saturday’s Houlton Alumni Scramble was a success as 10 teams competed. The three-person team of Bob and Harriet Gray and Scotte Flannery took first place with a net 27. Second place, determined by a scorecard playoff, went to Marty and Porter Gervais, Logan Holmes, and Jared Tapley. The third place team was Jerry and Jane York, Marion Collins, and Mickie Finn, both tied at 30. Congratulations to all.

Coming up in a few weeks, Aug. 8-9, will be the County Open, to benefit the Houlton Health Services Foundation. Saturday will be an 18-hole, handicap stroke play tournament to be held here at Houlton Golf Course. It is open to all players with a handicap and will have many flights. Sunday will be at VaJoWa Golf Club in Island Falls. This will be an 18-hole four person Scramble with handicap. This is becoming a very popular format for this important tournament.

The Open will be celebrating 31 years helping to support our local hospital. We’ve all been cooped up this spring so let’s get out and make this a big year. Also, Friday night, there will be a fish fry at the restaurant at VaJoWa with a percentage of the proceeds going to the Foundation. Call Lori Weston at 521-2147 for more info or to sign up for the Saturday and/or Sunday golf events.

Coming on Aug. 15-16 will be our Club Championship and Presidents Cup Tournaments. These tournaments are only for our members and are a fun way to meet other members and see where you stand with other players. There will be winners in all flights.

The Babe Caron Memorial Tournament will be over the Labor Day weekend. The tournament is a two person team event, with half handicap on Saturday and full handicap on Sunday.

The Lakeside Restaurant is open and running strong. Chef Aaron and crew are eager to provide you delicious meals with great service and a distinctive ambiance to dine in. We’re just a few short miles outside of town and you won’t be disappointed. Call 850-5250 for reservations.

We will continue to improve our golf course to give you a great experience and a fun day. In the next couple of weeks we will have another volunteer day to tend to some other issues on the course. Please use the broken tee baskets on the tees. The tee heads can damage our lawn mowers if it is caught in the wrong place on the reels. With your help, we will continue to have a beautiful golf course. Hope to see you on the course.

Houlton Community Golf Course is located on 6 Country Club Drive in New Limerick. For more information on the course call 532-2662, email houltongolf@gmail.com or visit their website www.houltongolf.com.
