PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Mark and Emily Turner Library will host a multimedia exhibit on China featuring the photos of a Presque Isle resident.

Lewis Sandler will display photographs and art, gathered from his 30 years in China, at the library’s Akeley Gallery from Nov. 4 through Dec. 30.

The library will host an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4.

What makes this exhibition unique is it focuses only on China, and will include abstract photos, traditional, classical and modern with a sprinkle of pop art, Sandler said. Chinese music, videos, a puzzle to win and a special drawing activity for children will also be featured.

Sandler earned a BS from Nasson College in Sanford and a JD degree. Originally from Massachusetts. He spent nearly 30 years working and living in Beijing, teaching as an undergraduate and doctoral instructor at a prestigious science and technology university. He taught English literature, creative writing, legal English, English debate and a photography design course.

Sandler wrote the textbook “Beyond Science.”

“[I] now live in Presque Isle in a beautifully quiet, semi-secluded log cabin and spend my free time taking and creating photographs of interesting subjects,” Sandler said.

He returned to the U.S. in 2019 with thousands of photos of Beijing and other places of interest around China and Asia.
