75 Years Ago September 23, 1948

Sherman Mills Army Veteran Attends Unit Reunion in Ohio– Gerald Merry and Leland Crockett returned recently from a motor trip to Ohio and the reunion of the 37 Infantry Division of which Gerald was a member. They were accompanied as far as Schenectady, NY., by Glenda Merry, Mris. Viola Bragg and Elaine Cox, who visited Mr. and Mrs. Francis (Alda Merry) Borden, Jr. En route to Ohio they called on ex-service friends. Some of the places of interest they visited were: White Mountains, Green Mountains, Secret Caverns, Niagara Falls, across Canada to Detroit, Mich. At Battle Creek, Mich, they visited the Percy JonesHosptial and called on Cpl. Kermit Ingraham of Sherman, who is a patient there. They found spirits and steadily gaining.

50 Years Ago September 26, 1973

Daigle Is Vice Chairman Of Saint Francis Board– John M. Daigle, a native of Houlton, has been elected Vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of Saint Francis College in Biddeford. Mr. Daigle is president and chief executive officer of Casco Bank and Trust Company of Portland. Mr. Daigle attended public school in HOulton and Ricker College until he entered Babson College in Massachusetts, from which he graduated second in his class “with high distinction” in 1954 with a BS degree in Business Administration. In 1958 he was named controller of Casco Bank and Trust Company and was promoted to treasurer five years later. He was elected a director of Casco Bank in 1969.

New FM Radio Station Goes On Air Today – WDHP- FM in Presque Isle- Caribou has announced that they will officially be on the air as of today. They are located 96.9 on the FM dial and are going to broadcast in stereo quadraphonic which is new in Aroostook County.

HHS golfers compete at states, Hodgdon team falls in match play – Houlton High School golfers will be competing this weekend  in the state championships at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro. The Houlton team qualified to participate in the state “B” tournament, finishing sixth in the regionals with a score of 390. Other teams competing at the state meet are Presque Isle in the ‘A’ competition, with Central Aroostook and Ashland participating in the ‘C’ event. The top 13 schoolboy players from the Regional Meet held last month in Limestone earned the right to move on to the individual championships this Saturday at Natanis Golf Course, as well. 

OSUT Graduate – Army National Guard Pfc. Troy A. Fitzpatrick has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. The training included completion of basic military training and advanced individual training, (AIT). The basic trainee received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history and traditions. During AIT, the soldier completed the field artillery cannon crew member advanced individual training course. Trainees learned to maintain, prepare and load ammunition for firing, operate and perform operator maintenance on prime movers, self-propelled Howitzers, and ammunition vehicles; and perform crew maintenance and participate in organizational maintenance of weapons and related equipment. They also learned to establish and maintain radio and wire communications. Fitzpatrick is the son of George A. Fitzpatrick and Patricia A. Fitzpatrick of Houlton and is a 1998 graduate of Houlton High School.
