George A. Wells

ImageCLAY CENTER, KANSAS – George A. Wells, 47, of Clay Center, Kansas, died September 28, 2007 after a long illness.
    He was born March 18, 1960 in Choctaw County, Mississippi. George graduated from Caribou High School in 1978. He married Barbara St. Peter on June 22, 1979; they divorced in 1997. George served in the U.S. Navy from 1978 to 1982. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Austin (LPD-4) as a machinist mate and boiler technician stationed out of Norfolk, Virginia and Portsmouth, Virginia. He returned home in 1982 and worked for Belanger’s Diesel in Caribou and Fairfield Energy Venture in Fort Fairfield, Maine.     George moved to Clay Center in 1997 and worked for Hutchinson-Mayrath and was employed by the City of Manhattan at the time of his death. He attended St. Paul Lutheran Church and was active in Habitat for Humanity.
    He married Gloria Gust on April 30, 2005.
    Besides his wife, George is survived by his three daughters, Kari Wells-Puckett and her husband, Martin of Augusta, Amanda Wells and her fiancé, Christopher Oelschiegel of Charlestown, Massachusetts, and Jamie Wells of Brooklyn, New York; one step-daughter, Mariah Gust of Clay Center; his father, Earl Wells, a sister, Sheila Haley and a special nephew, William Haley of Clay Center; a sister, Wanda Sullivan, her husband, Jim, and their children, Caitlin, Dillon, and Colin of Rineyville; a brother, Kenneth Wells and his wife, Barbara, of Manhattan, Kansas. He was predeceased by his mother, Nancy Wells.
    George was forever the optimist and upbeat, even when faced with his difficult health issues. His “Good Morning” will be missed by all who knew him.
    A family gathering was held Monday, October 1 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, and a Celebration of Life service was held on Tuesday, October 2 at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center, Kansas.
    Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity or to the Clay County Hospital Foundation in care of the funeral home.
