Wednesday – Friday
Low pressure that brought snow to the region yesterday will track east south of Nova Scotia today. Partly cloudy to partly sunny skies build across the Valley today with mostly dry conditions expected. Tonight, mostly cloudy skies overspread the SJV as an Arctic cold front approaches bringing increasing chances of snow showers after midnight.
The front looks to move through Thursday morning with a line of heavy snow showers possible along the frontal boundary. In general, most areas are looking at around 1-inch snowfall. Additionally, northwest winds will increase following frontal passage with gusts to 25 mph picking up new fallen snow and reducing visibility at times, particularly around agricultural fields.
Very cold Arctic air will rapidly move into the Valley behind the front with temperatures falling from the 30s Thursday morning to the single digits Thursday afternoon/evening producing flash freezing of precipitation on area roadways. Hazardous travel conditions, with visibility rapidly dropping to near zero, sudden strong wind gusts, and suddenly slick surfaces, are possible Thursday.
Thursday night, northwest winds remain brisk with gusts in the 20-25 mph range. With temperatures expected to drop into the 0 to -5°F range across northern Maine, wind chill values could fall into the -25 to -30°F range in the North Woods and -15 to -25°F in other areas of northern Maine, with blowing snow remaining a hazard into the overnight hours.
Arctic high pressure will slide across the Valley Friday with very cold conditions under mostly sunny skies in the morning. Highs in the low-to-mid-10s are expected for most locations with wind chill values around 0°F through the day. Skies become partly sunny by afternoon as a disturbance approaches with a slight chance of snow showers Friday afternoon/evening. Partly cloudy skies are expected Friday night with overnight lows near 0°F in most locations.
Saturday – Tuesday
Arctic high pressure will move east Saturday with another Arctic cold front approaching later in the day and moving through overnight into Sunday with a slight chance of snow showers for the SJV. A reinforcing shot of Arctic air settles into the Valley later Sunday with partly cloudy and cold conditions Monday and Tuesday.
Highs in the low 20s Saturday and Sunday then the low-to-mid-10s Monday and Tuesday. Overnight lows in the low 10s Saturday night, near 0°F Sunday night, and falling into the 0 to 5 below range Monday night and 0 to 5 above Tuesday night.
