Maine needs diverse power sources

To the editor:

Up here in Aroostook County, energy issues are a part of everyday life. They affect what families pay each month and what businesses can afford to do. That’s why I appreciate Sen. Susan Collins’ steady work on policies that keep Maine’s power reliable and affordable.

Sen. Collins knows Maine can’t rely on just one kind of power source. We need a diverse mix of resources — including hydro, nuclear, biomass, wood and natural gas. That’s how we keep energy costs steady and people working in every region of the state.

She also knows how to get results in Washington, which is more than I can say about Augusta. Governor Janet Mills’ handling of energy policy leaves much to be desired. Her approach to net energy billing in particular is pushing costs up by $450 million per year while creating more confusion.

As I’ve said, there are better and smarter ways to support clean energy in Maine. We need policies that keep projects moving and costs in check, not ones that leave people wondering what the rules are from one year to the next.

Sen. Collins’ work in Washington has helped expand energy options and strengthen Maine’s local economies. It’s also given Mainers some predictability at a time when energy costs and demand keep climbing. That’s the kind of leadership we need.

I’m grateful for Sen. Collins’ commitment to Maine communities and our state’s future. She should keep working to advance smart, no-nonsense policies that increase our energy alternatives and economic potential.
