HOULTON, Maine — The County Federal Credit Union is proud to announce the awarding of a Community Mini-Grant to Bridge to Hope, a nonprofit organization created to help ease the burden of a cancer diagnosis.
In celebration of its 70th anniversary in 2026, The County launched a Community Mini-Grant initiative to provide financial support to nonprofit organizations leading impactful projects across the region.
For over 20 years, Bridge to Hope has hosted cancer awareness walks to fundraise in order to assist local community members battling cancer. The aid provided has covered hotel rooms, meals and heating assistance, along with other expressed needs.
“They stepped up when my own family member was diagnosed with cancer,” Houlton Branch Manager William Belyea said. “They have such a big impact on our community, and have provided support all throughout her ongoing battle.”
As part of their mission, Bridge to Hope created a Cardboard Boat Race, which is in its second year, featuring boats made exclusively of cardboard and duct tape – similar to a cancer diagnosis which can be flattening without the proper support. The goal is to have a fun and free day where families can put aside their worries for a few hours with food and entertainment provided.
“We have made it our mission to not spend any financial donations that we receive from fundraising to be spent on operating costs,” Kim Folsom, board member of Bridge to Hope, said. “We want all of the funds to go to people who are battling cancer of any type in our area.”
Due to donating all of what they’ve raised back to the community, the grant funding provided will be used to design and host a website to promote events and help connect people with resources.
“Aside from the basics of professional services and office supplies that can’t be avoided, we are happy to say that less than one percent of our income goes towards these expenses,” Folsom said. “With this Community Mini-Grant that has been awarded to us, we will finally be able to have our website designed and maintained for the next five years!”
