The Maine Games has announced the date and venue for their annual National Anthem Audition, and the chance to become the official Maine Games National Anthem singer at select events during the annual sports festival this year. The audition will be held at the Community Little Theater, at 30 Academy St.
Saturday, April 4, is the audition date, and online applications must be received by March 25. Go to www.mainegames.org for more information and to submit your online application.
In addition to being named the Maine Games National Anthem Singer for 2009, the top singer will receive a Maine Games trophy, the opportunity to sing at Hadlock Field, prior to a Portland Sea Dogs game, as well as singing the Star Spangled Banner at Fenway Park in 2009. (disclaimer: The Boston Red Sox reserve the right of final approval and will choose the date of the performance.)
Singers will be given 90 seconds to perform their most traditional, patriotic rendition of the Star Spangle Banner for a panel of judges.
This year the Maine Games is also offering an essay contest for students in grades 5-8 and 9-12. The topic is, “What the Star Spangled Banner means to me.” The authors of the top essays will be invited to read their entry at the National Anthem Audition in addition to receiving other prizes.
The Maine Games is the official State Games of the Pine Tree State, and each year they provide a statewide, multi-event Olympic-style sports festival for amateur athletes of all ages and abilities. All across America, members of the National Congress of State Games provide similar opportunities. The National Congress of State Games is a member of the United States Olympic Committee.
