When students at Katahdin High School are inducted as members of the National Honor Society they are expected to demonstrate, on a daily basis, the criteria by which they were selected. The criteria by which students are judged are known as the four pillars of the National Honor Society. These pillars are Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Each pillar is valued and students are expected to be exemplars in each quality.
The Service component is an integral part of the experience as students work to become valued school and community members. Members of Katahdin High School’s National Honor Society have worked on several community service projects this school year, service being one of the four pillars used as criteria for membership into this organization. Members are volunteering their time at the Lumberman’s Museum in Patten as they work to prepare for their spring opening. We have this year, as we have for several years, worked with the administration of the Battered Women’s Shelter to help them to provide a better Christmas for families they serve.
Our members have also participated in the Toys for Tots project. We place boxes in local schools and businesses to collect toys and donations. Then, we pass the donations along so they can be distributed to needy families.
Our organization does some school service projects as well. We have students who provide academic support to other students as we work to make the school a learning community. We will be hosting the Middle School Awards Dinner in May as we have for the past several years. We will be acting as ushers at graduation in June as one of our service components for membership.
Our National Honor Society members gain valuable experiences through their commitments of time and of giving of themselves. They build on these experiences as they work to become valued citizens within their respective communities.
