Youth baseball results
    The Minor League kicked off its season with a bang. At the Pool Field on Friday morning, Katahdin Trust took on Key Bank. Katahdin Trust prevailed by a score of 5-3.     The leading hitter for Katahdin Trust was Nick Bartlett with an RBI single. Key Bank was led by Grant Stewart with a double and singles from Gavin Kelley and Joseph Boone. Defensively, Oliver Gerrish of Katahdin Trust snagged a line drive off the bat of Sam Gray. Issac Devine came in to pitch and didn’t surrender a run. Bartlett struck out five over the last two innings to preserve the win. Gray, Alex Brewer and Jacob O’Berry combined to strike out 15 for Key Bank.
    At the Pine Street field, Knights of Columbus pulled out the thrilling 3-2 win over Savings Bank of Maine. Denny Young picked up the win on the mound, combining with Kyle Kilcollins to strike out 10 batters.
    Michael Mahon proved to be the big bat for K of C, going 4-4 at the plate and driving in the game winning run. Ryan Bridges led the way offensively for Savings Bank of Maine with three singles. Brycen Libby and Drew Henderson pitched well in defeat, striking out four batters apiece.
    The Major League opened up the summer season with Rotary defeating Kiwanis by a score of 8 to 1. Chase Norton, Andrew Paterson and Cody Lyford combined to throw a no-hitter, striking out 13 batters. Rotary was led offensively by Keeghan Lowe’s double and single, Norton’s two singles and a single from Chris Carroll, Travis Sylvain, Ryder Soucy and Paterson. Kiwanis got key defensive plays from Andrew Michaud, Karson Wilcox and Michael Donovan. Rotary was helped by the fine play from Soucy, Norton, Paterson and Lyford.
    Opening week for the Pony League played out well with lots of action. RBD opened the season against Mars Hill. Dillon Kingsbury gave up just one run in four innings, striking out nine. Kingsbury also helped his cause by slamming a home run and a triple. Jacob Player, Andrew Wilcox, Ben McKenna and Ryan Bernier all chipped in with singles. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough, as RBD fell by the final score of 5-3.
    The second opening day game saw the Wildcats taking on Fort Fairfield. Ryley Norton struck out eight batters to help the Wildcats to the 16-6 victory. Brennen Shaw paced the balanced offensive attack with a triple and two doubles. Amos Dean chipped in with two doubles and a single, and Ethan York and Andrew Legassie both added singles. Defensively, E. York, Wilder York, Mike Guerrette, Sam Clukey, Isaac Lajoie, Shaw and Legassie all had key plays to stop rallies.
    Evan Waddell turned in a powerful pitching performance to help RBD break into the win column against Fort Fairfield, giving up just two runs in five innings of work. Waddell also did some damage at the plate with three hits.
    Kingsbury also had three hits, one of which was his second home run of the season. Jacob Player helped out with a double and a single, and Andrew Wilcox kept his hot bat going with two singles. Josh Reed blasted a triple, and Steve Ford, Ben McKenna, Ryan Bernier, Khyver Lowe and Jacob Williams each singled. Bernier also made a diving catch at first base that led to an unassisted double play.
    The Wildcats bested Mars Hill in extra innings by a count of 3-2. Shaw and W. York combined to strike out 16 batters and give up only one earned run. Shaw helped himself at the plate with a triple. Dean was the hero, blasting a double to score York in the eighth inning.
Outdoor Pool
    The Outdoor Pool is now open for the summer. Hours are Monday to Friday from 2 to 4:45 p.m. and 6 to 7:45 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4:45 p.m.
    Drain Days for the pool are July 2, July 16 and July 30.
    Special July 4 hours are 1 to 4:45 p.m. only.
Youth soccer registration
    The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is currently holding registration for its youth soccer program at the William V. Haskell Community Center.
    The program is offered to boys and girls in grades one to six. The registration fee is $15.
    Schedules and rosters will be handed out at the community center on Wednesday, August 13 with play beginning August 25th for grades one to two and the week of August 18th for grades three to six.
Indoor Pool
    The Presque Isle Indoor Pool still has openings in the following classes: parent/toddler and infant classes on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. or 6 p.m. and Thursdays at 6 p.m.; 4- to 5-year-old classes on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., learn to swim 1 on Mondays at 9 or 10 a.m., Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m.; learn to swim 2-3 on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Thursdays at 1 p.m.; and level IV-VI classes on Mondays at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., Tuesdays at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Thursdays at 4 p.m. or 6 p.m.
    Summer general swim hours are Monday to Friday from 2 to 3:45 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 7 to 8:45 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3:45 p.m.
