Caribou High School students who have been named Students of the Month for November through February were recently awarded free movie passes by members of the CHS National Honor Society which sponsors this award. Each student will also have their name permanently added to a plaque which recognizes this honor.
Caribou High School students were named Students of the Month for November 2008 through February of this year. Sponsored by the CHS National Honor Society, students recognized for this award receive two free movie passes and have their name permanently inscribed on a plaque at the high school. Taking part in the presentation are, from left, front row are: NHS Co-Chair Jesse Stephens, Delta Wiggens, January student of the monh; Lauren DeMerchant, November; Brianna Gorence, October and Jeoff Pucci, co-chair of the NHS program. Brianna Gorence was named Student of the Month for October, 2008. A member of the Caribou FFA, and the Maine FFA state creed speaker, Gorence was recommended for this award by her advisor, Tom Hale. She has competed in numerous FFA conferences, including the FFA State Convention, the Big E, held in Springfield, Mass., and the National Conference in Indianapolis.
During these conferences Gorence placed first at the Big East in creed speaking, and placed third in the national preliminaries. She was also recognized for serving as the Caribou FFA chapter secretary and for having been an important part of the chapter itself.
Gorence has also been recognized for her 200 completed community service hours.
Lauren DeMerchant was named the Student of the Month in November, 2008. DeMerchant was nominated for the award by CHS English teacher Mrs. Alana Margeson, At the time of her award, she had worked at the Caribou Pet Rescue for more than two years and has aspirations to become a veterinarian. DeMerchant is described as showing great potential and is extremely focused, responsible and mature.
Madison Outing received the December Student of the Month award. Outing was recognized for being a highly motivated student, with an outstanding attitude. She is also honored for being very dedicated to the CHS athletics, playing three sports during the year. Outing was selected by three of her teachers at Caribou High School, Mrs. Barbara Souther, Mr. Roy Alden and Mr. Stephen Burden.
Delta Wiggens was recognized in January by her homeroom teacher, Ms. Long, who stated she had observed tremendous personal growth regarding the student. Wiggens is focused on childcare and she also is a mentor to a freshman student, assisting in both school work and behavior.
Duncan ‘DJ’ Flynn has been named as the outstanding Student of the Month for February, as a result of his participation in most every aspect at CHS. Mrs. Alana Margeson said she has seen his rigorous schedule and how he meets and exceeds this demand. Flynn is a member of the student council, played soccer in the fall, recently completed his nordic and alpine ski season and is also a member of the track team. He is also a member of the CHS math team, the jazz band and volunteers to assist during school-sponsored activities including helping to run various concessions.
