Members of the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department responded to a call received at 7:47 p.m. Monday, July 5, regarding a residential fire at 328 Davis Road in Woodland. The structure was located an estimated 20 miles out, one of the furthest distances from the CFD in the Caribou coverage area, according to Chief Roy Woods. Woods said a neighbor noticed the smoke coming from the home and alerted the owner, Mike Michaud, who was outside mowing his lawn. “Because of the amount of time that had elapsed between when the fire started and when it was noticed plus the distance from the station, “stated Woods, “the two-story home was totally involved when firefighters arrived at the scene and the structure was a total loss.”
Firefighters, six trucks and one ambulance, were at the scene for four hours. Mutual aid in the form of tanker trucks were supplied by the Washburn and Presque Isle Fire Departments.
Chief Woods stated that the blaze started on the enclosed front porch of the older home, traveled into the walls up into the attic. “I question that the fire source was electrical,” said the Caribou Fire Chief. There were no injuries sustained by firefighters and Woods said that both Michaud and his dog, the only occupants of the residence, were both fine.
The property was fully insured.
Chief Woods stated that there were working smoke detectors at the residence but no sprinklers, “ Smoke detectors will awaken you but they will not protect you while trying to get out — sprinklers will.”
