A special birth moment

To the editor: I remember going to college for nursing and eagerly anticipating my three-month obstetrics rotation. It was so exciting to me that I would witness the very first moments of a child's life, and to learn in advance all the wonderful ways that baby would grow. This included pre-and postpartum care, as well as experiences in the delivery room.

A punny thing happened

The language we use here in the U.S. is considered modern English. As a living language, it grows and changes just like the rest of us.

Speak against abortion bill

To the editor: There have been some previous editorials referring to pending legislation to allow late-term abortions. The bill has now been released as LD1619. This is a horrific bill that would allow the life of a baby to be taken right up to the delivery. How is that not murder of an innocent life?

Uncle Sumner

Sumner Whitney was born in Phillips, Maine, on March 5, 1809. He married Diana Bradstreet and together they had eight children, the first two born in New Brunswick and the third in Bridgewater. Only four of the eight lived to adulthood. Around 1846, Sumner moved to Presque Isle.

Spring brings surprises

It’s that time of year again: The days are getting warmer and longer and the birds are returning. Although the locals won’t call it spring until the robins are hopping around, the calendar tells us that March 20 was the first day of spring — which might be true for the lower half of the state, but we in the north have at least one more storm to deal with before we can say spring is here.

Please use your common sense

For several years I’ve written letters in this paper informing people of the abuse that goes on behind the scenes to train wild animals for circuses. Now with the circus due to come to Presque isle in a couple of weeks and seeing wild bears riding scooters are one of the acts to entertain the crowds, I’m forced once again to appeal to your common sense.

Weighing evidence

Birthdates and places may also be found in different records such as marriage certificates, naturalization papers, the U.S. Census, Social Security records, military draft registrations and service records, as well as others. But what if the information on these records differs? What’s a genealogist to do?

Please speak up

To the editor: This is the first time I have ever felt passionate enough on an issue to write a letter to the editor, but on Saturday, March 25, I attended a Speak Up For Life meeting in Presque Isle and learned of legislation regarding the abortion issue here in Maine.

Vote no on abortion bill

To the editor: At one time people believed that abortion was safe and it was legal. It’s still legal in early pregnancy in Maine. But I understand that now there are some bills being written to expand abortion in Maine and I think the people need to be informed what their policy makers are doing.

How Presque Isle’s hospital came to be

Presque Isle has always had, since its early inception, some form of medical care. whether it be through visiting doctors or in private homes. By the late 1800s, Presque Isle had two private hospitals.

Good-faith investments in bad-faith businesses

I recognize a pattern in Presque Isle; tell me if this sounds familiar: A business person makes an investment in a distressed asset; our community rallies in cautious support; predictable obstacles emerge; the investor vanishes; citizens are left holding the bag.

City receives AARP Age-Friendly nod

The City of Presque Isle recently received recognition from the American Association of Retired Persons for being a member in good standing of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities having successfully completed a cycle of improvement.

Anti-war demonstrations

To the editor: Twenty full years ago, on March 19, 2003, the United States invaded Iraq. Immediately thereafter [as well as before], anti war protests began throughout Maine. Our protest in Presque Isle has been continuous since then, in all weathers, through all these years. And we are tired.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month. The roots of this celebratory week date back to 1909, when a group of what we might today call “influencers” met on Feb. 28.

Supporting the businesses we have

To the editor: It seems Presque Isle has had a series of unfortunate bad luck with the closing of so many area businesses. Businesses that have been with the city for years, established in the community, gone without notice or warning:

Passenger loads are trending up

In 2022, we at the Presque Isle International Airport had our best number of annual boardings since 2007. Several months in 2022 were the best since the year 2000.
