A commercial garage that served as an auto body shop was destroyed and two vehicles inside are a total loss after a structure fire Thursday, Van Buren Fire Chief Brian Caron said in a release.
The Van Buren Fire Department responded to the scene at 427 Main St., along Route 1, at 11:48 a.m., at which point the building was already fully engulfed in flames, Caron said.
The department contained the fire to the building, but three nearby vehicles sustained heat damage. The garage owner, who the department did not name, suffered burns to his hands and went to a local hospital for treatment.
Fire departments from Grand Isle and St. Leonard, New Brunswick, assisted in fighting the fire. The Van Buren Ambulance Department, Van Buren Water District, Van Buren Light and Power District and the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear. The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
