To the editor:
I wonder how many Maine citizens are aware that the state legislature is considering a bill to “remove authorization of clergy members to solemnize marriages.” The bill, sponsored by Rep. Boyd Marley (D-Portland) will reduce church wedding in Maine to mere symbolism. The state will no longer recognize marriage as a Divine institution. This terrible piece of legislation, LD 779 “An Act To Remove Clergy as Signatories on Marriage Licenses” was scheduled to be the subject of a March 13 public hearing in Augusta.
Under current law, no Maine citizen is required to be married in a religious service. Nor should they be. But neither should they be denied the opportunity. Maine has always recognized marriage as a Divine institution and there is no benefit to changing that now. People in Maine are free to solemnize their marriage in a manner of their own choosing, religious or not. Why limit that choice? I urge you to contact your legislator and ask them to leave marriage alone and vote against LD 779.
