Cougars even season record; Lady Cougars overwhelmed
The Katahdin Cougars evened their season record at 1-1 with a 61-54 win over visiting Ashland on Monday.
Ethan Qualey tallied 20 points and senior Tom Anderson added 14 more, as the Cougars built a 38-26 halftime lead, and held the advantage, as the Hornets outscored them in the second half, 28-23.
Last Friday, the Cougars lost their home opener to Central Aroostook, as they were overpowered, 59-34.
The Panthers held a 32-18 halftime advantage and then held the Cougars to three third-quarter points to extend their lead to 45-21 en route to the win.
Cameron York paced CAHS with 23 points, while Logan McCarthy added 10.
For Katahdin, Anderson scored 13 points, while Qualey chipped in with 11 more.
On the girl’s side, the Katahdin Lady Cougars were overtaken by host Ashland, 52-39, on Monday night.
The Hornets built a 21-6 opening lead and built it to a 39-16 halftime cushion. The Hornets extended their lead to 47-26 after three periods.
Olivia McNally paced Katahdin with 17 points, while Mindy Chasse led the way for Ashland with 27 points and 16 rebounds.
GHCA teams have different outcomes
The Greater Houlton Christian Academy opened its season on Monday at Easton, with each team coming home with different outcomes.
The girls had no trouble with the Bears, overwhelming them 62-30.
The Lady Eagles opened the game with a 25-7 lead and built it to a 56-21 advantage over three quarters. Kari Brewer had a big night with 21 points, followed by Chelsie Lord with 11 points and Sarah Riopel with 10 more for the winners.
On the boy’s side, the Eagles struggled against the host Bears, taking a 76-27 loss.
The Bears took advantage of the young Eagles, holding an insurmountable halftime lead of 47-10, extending it to 61-18 after three. Chad Duff led the Eagles with 13 points.
East Grand comes up
short in opener
The Lubec Hornets stung East Grand in the teams’ mutual season opener in Danforth last Friday, 57-45.
The game was close with Lubec leading 19-15 at halftime and by a slim 35-32 after the third period. But, the Hornets broke the game open in the final period, outscoring East Grand, 22-13 for the win.
Tyler Morse led East Grand with 23 points and Kaleb Dicker netted 18 more.
