Monday action:
The Greater Houlton Christian Academy finally hit the win column on Monday in Danforth, as the teams swept the Vikings in baseball and softball action.
FIRING – Hodgdon’s Ryan Wellington winds up and hurls the ball toward home plate during last Thursday’s game against Limestone. The Eagles won 17-2.
For the girls, the Lady Eagles defeated East Grand in a slugfest, 39-22.
Kiki Smart picked up the win in a complete game effort. She was instrumental at the plate, hitting two inside-the-park homers — a two run and a solo blast. Kasi Parker doubled and singled twice, while Megan Carroll also had a pair of hits.
For East Grand, Nikki Tuck tripled and hit three singles. Courtney Lloyd tripled and singled twice, while Liz Gilman doubled and had a pair of singles. Kaitlyn Beaudoin added an inside-the-park homer, as well.
The Eagles also defeated East Grand in a doubleheader on the baseball diamond.
Chad Duff picked up the opening win throwing a complete game, defeating East Grand in 10 innings, 12-10. Duff struck out 19 batters, while helping his own cause offensively with four hits.
GHCA’s Ryan Campbell went 5-for-6 with two triples and a double to drive in four runs, Mackenzie Burns was 3-for-6, including a double, Jaron Gray went 3-for-6 and Ted Bowers was 2-for-6, with three RBIs.
In the second game, the Eagles won in five innings, 5-3, as the game was called due to rain.
The Eagles broke a 3-all tie in the fifth inning when Chris Morin hit a two-run home run to win the game.
Sophomore Jeff Campbell went the distance for GHCA, while offensively he was also supported by Duff with two hits, including a triple, and he scored three runs and Burns had two hits, including a triple, for three RBIs.
The Eagles are 3-4 on the year.
May 17th action:
The Katahdin Cougars showed their prowess on Saturday against the defending state Class D champion Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners, sweeping them in a doubleheader to preserve their undefeated season thus far, 7-0.
In the first game, the Cougars and Mariners went head-to-head, with Katahdin taking a 2-1 victory behind a strong pitching performance from junior Andy Kay.
Kay didn’t allow a run through six innings of work, while giving up three hits and seven walks and striking out 11.
The game came down to the bottom of the seventh inning, as Deer Isle capitalized on two errors and a pair of walks from Evan McCarthy, who came on in relief of Kay in the final inning. With two outs, and the tying run at second, McCarthy got the game-ending strikeout.
Katahdin reached Ciomei early, taking a 2-0 lead behind three walks, two wild pitches and McCarthy’s sacrifice fly. Katahdin’s Kay had pitched out of two jams when he loaded the bases with two outs in the first and fifth innings.
In the second game, the Cougars rolled to an 11-1 win, as Josh Guiggey shut down the Mariners. He helped his own cause with a pair of hits, while McCarthy singled twice, hit a sacrifice fly and drove in four runs. Kay doubled twice and Matt McAvoy doubled home a run and then scored to give Katahdin a 10-run advantage ending the game early in the sixth. The Cougars collected 14 hits in the game.
The game was knotted 1-all until McCarthy hit a single up the middle to score Tom Anderson and Brady Curtis with one out in the second. From there, the Cougars erupted for six runs on six hits in the third. McCarthy, Ethan Qualey and Andrew Hawkins all singled home a run for Katahdin and Kay doubled in the rally to give Katahdin a 9-1 lead.
In girl’s action, the Lady Cougars were swept by Deer Isle in their doubleheader, but Katahdin didn’t make it easy.
In the opener, the Mariners won 12-11 in the 10th inning behind Anika Powers game-winning hit, and in the second contest, it took eight innings before Deer Isle pulled out the 15-14 victory.
In the first game, Melissa Duffy, Lacey Pelletier and Felisha Robinson all singled twice, while in the next game, Jasmine Pelletier and Robinson each had a pair of hits.
In other softball action last Saturday, Southern Aroostook topped Hodgdon, 30-12.
Bre Bubar collected four singles and a double to drive in five runs, while Liz Goodall had four singles and a triple for three RBIs. Jasmine Rockwell chipped in with four singles as well for Southern Aroostook.
For Hodgdon, Taylor Hovey singled twice, as the Lady Warriors outhit Hodgdon, 25-5.
Against Ashland, the Lady Hawks didn’t have much better luck as the Hornets stung Hodgdon, 10-1.
Offensively, Sam Lycette, Amanda Ryan, Whitney Wallace and Kim Pszenney all singled for Hodgdon.
May 16th action:
Last Friday, the Central Aroostook Panthers toppled GHCA in a baseball doubleheader 15-5 and 20-1.
In the opener, Mackenzie Burns doubled for the Eagles.
In the second game, the Panthers opened the game with a 16-run first inning.
For GHCA, Matt Lincoln had a run-scoring single.
On the girls’ side, Central Aroostook swept the doubleheader 11-6 and 24-8, as Sarah Long led the Lady Panthers with two homers and six RBIs.
In the opener, GHCA’s Kasi Parker tripled to drive in two runs, while Megan Carroll and Emily Little both singled twice to plate a run.
In the second game, Carroll tripled and singled for an RBI for GHCA.
In other action, Woodland shut out East Grand, 15-0. Kaleb Dicker and Matt Steeves both singled for the Vikings.
Woodland also won the softball contest, 15-3, with Jackie Dodge leading the Lady Vikes with a run-scoring single.
It was Anthony Diaferio’s bases-loaded bunt in the bottom of the ninth to give Southern Aroostook an 8-7 win over visiting Shead.
Tyler Robinson homered and singled to bring in three runs, while Cody Robinson and Rob Toothaker each hit solo blasts.
On the girls’ side, SACS topped Fort Fairfield, 25-10 behind Evangeline Goodall’s homer, triple and two singles for two RBIs, while sister Liz had a pair of hits, triple and double to knock in four runs.
May 15th action:
Last Thursday, the undefeated Limestone Eagles pulled out a 19-11 victory over host Hodgdon by using a six-run seventh inning.
Pacing Hodgdon’s offense were Haley Quint with a triple and single; Taylor Hovey had a double and single, while Destiny Ellis, Dayna Tidd, Sam Lycette and Lizz Scott all singled. Hovey and Tidd collected two RBIs.
The Eagles had no trouble on the baseball diamond, as they overpowered Hodgdon 17-2 behind the combined effort of Matt Beaulieu and Matt Enman, who one-hit the Hawks. Hodgdon’s Ryan Wellington reached base on a double.
The Southern Aroostook Warriors beat East Grand, 14-2, as the Warriors struck for seven runs in the third to extend their lead.
Toothaker and Boulier each tripled and singled to drive in a run, while Robinson doubled to plate two runs for the winners.
For East Grand, Dave Cropley had a pair of hits, while Andrew Gilman had a run-scoring single.
May 14th action:
Last Wednesday, the Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors topped Central Aroostook of Mars Hill, 25-14 behind Liz Goodall’s grand slam and triple for five RBIs. Sarah Crandall homered and singled to drive in five runs, while Kim Grant collected five singles and an RBI and Brittany Charette had four singles for two RBIs.
The Katahdin Lady Cougars triumphed over Hodgdon, 23-6, as a 13-run fifth inning was highlighted by Jasmine Pelletier’s two-run home run for the winners.
Pelletier also doubled, while Kayla Stevens stroked three singles and a triple for Katahdin.
For Hodgdon, Quint doubled twice and Tidd had two singles.
On the boys’ side, Katahdin overtook Hodgdon, 17-4, as the Cougars’ Qualey led the way with a three-run homer and double. Kay doubled and singled, as Katahdin outhit Hodgdon, 16-4.
For Hodgdon, Travis Quint doubled.
May 13th action:
Last Tuesday, the Warriors got by Central Aroostook, 6-1, behind the strong pitching effort of Dakota Sleeper, who struck out 13, while allowing one run on two hits. He helped his own cause from the plate by knocking in two runs. Josh Branscombe singled twice, while Darin Flewelling belted a run-scoring single.
The Wisdom Pioneers routed GHCA in softball action, 31-2.
Parker, Jamie Mellia and Hannah Hiscoe all singled.
GRIP – Hodgdon’s Jamie Ryan fielded a grounder and gets a good grip on the ball before throwing it in last Thursday’s game in Hodgdon. The Eagles won, 17-2.
