Road work, construction planned

HOULTON — A cloud of dust might be hovering above the town of Houlton this summer, but Houlton Town Manager Doug Hazlett said it’s a good thing.

Infrastructure, roadwork and other types of construction will be ongoing throughout the summer months and residents are asked to be patient and look toward the progress that is being made.
“Work has started on Bangor Street and I’m going to ask that folks have a lot of patience this summer,” said Hazlett. “There’s going to be a lot of construction going on. There’s the work on Bangor Street, the Savings Bank of Houlton is probably going to start this spring, the senior apartment complex in Market Square and we are going to be putting bids out shortly on sidewalks on North Street going the whole way up to Wal-Mart, as well as other sidewalks in residential areas.”
The creation of infrastructure has commonly been attributed to the rise in economic development and Hazlett said that’s a step in the right direction for the town. However, there is a lot of mess that comes before the final outcome of all that construction.
“So, there’s going to be a lot of construction traffic and a lot of noise,” he said. “There’s going to be dirt from that on the streets, and public works guys are going to do their best to keep up with it with the street sweeper, but it’s for good reason. There is going to be a lot of noise and I ask that if people see things that are a problem, by all means, get a hold of me at the town office.”
