Fire — Fire originating behind the oven in the rear of the West End Bakery in the Ayoob Block at Kendall and Bangor streets just before seven this morning drove 18 people into the driving snowstorm outside. It resulted in the narrow escape of Miss Lou Taylor from suffocation by smoke.
Boy Scouts — The December Court of Honor for Boy Scout Troop 156 affiliated with the Court Street Baptist Church was held last Wednesday evening under the direction of Thomas Vose, Rev. W.B. Chase and George Haskell. The following scouts received promotions: John Ivey, second class; Payson Titcomb, first class. Merit badges were awarded as follows: Fred Boutilier, Victor Hunter, Clayton McCue, firemanship; Victor Hunter, first aid to animals; Clayton McCue, pioneering; Vaughn Nichols and Atwood Smart, life saving and swimming.

Fire — Fire destroyed three potato houses and two freight cars on the Littleton Station Road in sub-zero weather. Damage was estimated at $63,000 by Fire Chief Bert Wetmore. One was owned by Roy Ingraham, Sr. and the other two by Gordon Wiley. The Wiley houses had about 6,000 barrels of potatoes and the Ingraham house, 7,000. Both were insured, current value of potatoes is two dollars a barrel making a loss of $26,000 for the storage, approximately $15,000 for the three potato houses and $11,000 apiece for the refrigerator cars, making a grand total of $63,000 according to Wetmore.
Island Falls — Prizes were awarded for the Curtis campaign. First prize went to Connie Walker; second, Jane Greenlaw, and third to Gwen MacArthur.
DeMolay Officers — The Houlton Chapter, Order of DeMolay, held its initiation of officers on Thursday evening. Those initiated were, John Carson, Irvin MacDonald, Robert Kirk, Norman Hay, John Dunn, Raymond DeVeau, Stephen Bishop and Albert Condon.

Monticello — Russell Flewelling of the Lake Road in Monticello was the first-prize winner in the Home Decorating Contest, sponsored by the Houlton Chamber of Commerce. He won a 12-inch black and white television set. Honorable mention went to Joyce London, Gilbert Roy and Terry Quint.
Houlton — The Almon H. Fogg Co., located for many years on Main Street in Houlton, has announced plans to move the entire retail operation to the Building Center location on Bangor Street.
East Hodgdon — Mr. and Mrs. David Quint and family, Cindy, Matthew and Jodi will be guests of honor at a birthday dinner Friday honoring the birthdays of David and Jodi, at the home of Mrs. Harold Smith.
Dyer Brook — Miss Wanetta Townsend was a Saturday dinner guest of her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Slater in Houlton,
