To the editor:
President-elect Obama’s incoming economic team is talking about another stimulus package to help improve the economy. This comes on the heels of the original stimulus package of early 2008 and a variety of so-called “bailout” plans to stand up failing financial institutions. Now, the auto manufacturers have gotten their bailout and big retailers are starting to get in line with their hands out. How ironic that the government is saying it can fix the problem that it created in the first place. It’s akin to the fox promising to steal chickens from the farmer up the road and put them in your hen house to replace the ones he has eaten. We need to get the fox out of the equation.
I’d like to know where the Constitution calls for all of this government intervention. Regulations and mandates that are imposed to solve some perceived problem (like everyone not being able to buy that 3,000 square foot, four bedroom house) usually only create more problems (like people and businesses being granted loans they should not have qualified for). Can we please get back to living our lives by the tenets laid out in our original founding document?
You have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That means government cannot take those things away from you, which is a far different thing than having the government provide them for you. If you want to find the person responsible for providing for your basic rights, look no farther than the nearest mirror.
