CASWELL – Henry G. O’Bar, 77, died April 2, 2009, at Caribou following a brief illness. He was born at Limestone, August 11, 1931, the son of Edmund and Phyliss (Albert) O’Bar. He was a graduate of the Limestone High School and served with the US Air Force during the Korean War. He was employed with the US Postal Service in Limestone for over 30 years as a Postal Clerk. He was a member of the St. Louis Catholic Church in Limestone where he was also active in the Ecumenical Food Pantry. Henry was named Limestone’s Citizen of the Year in 2000. He was also a member of the Limestone Knights of Columbus; the Limestone Historical Society and a member of the American Field Service. Henry was a former Caswell Scout Master as well as a member of the Caswell school building Committee. He was a volunteer driver for RSVP, Meals on Wheels and was a Foster Parent for over 30 children through the Department of Human Services. Henry enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid stamp and coin collector and enjoyed camping and all outdoor activities. He married Adelma (Merrill) O’Bar on February 11, 1956.
Surviving in addition to his wife of Caswell are seven sons, Edmund O’Bar and his wife Cathy of Scarborough, Dale O’Bar and his wife Susan of Jacksonville, FL, Kevin O’Bar and his wife Pam of Caribou, Scott O’Bar and his wife Lisa of Old Orchard Beach, Chad O’Bar and Marcial O’Bar both of Bangor and Oscar O’Bar of NY, seven daughters, Nancy Gallagher and her husband David of Martinez, GA, Elizabeth Coates and her husband David of Kathleen, GA, Nicole Harris and her husband Fernando of Mundelein, IL, Holly Ready and her husband David of Vassalboro, Jemmala O’Bar of Caswell, Oleka O’Bar of Caribou and Charlene O’Bar of NY; two sisters, Elizabeth Ellis of Limestone and Mary Ann Kittle of Bowdoin; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Earl Herring of NC and two special loved AFS exchange students, Kari Antonsen of Norway and Zayako Nzai-Kilonzo of Kenya. He was predeceased by a brother, Arthur O’Bar and a sister, Pauline Herring.
Friends called at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou, 7-9 p.m., Sunday. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, April 6, 2009, at the St. Louis Catholic Church, with the Very Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie, pastor, officiating in a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment will take place at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou. In lieu of flowers friends who wish to contribute in memory of Henry may do so to the Ecumenical Food Pantry at St. Louis Catholic Church or to the Frost Memorial Library Building Fund.
