At Mount Desert on Saturday, the Wildcat teams took on the Trojans in baseball and softball doubleheaders. The Lady Wildcats split their games with the Lady Lynx as Krista Coffin pitched the day’s first win for Presque Isle. Alicia Palmer came in during the fourth inning for the save in the 10-5 win. Offensively for Presque Isle, Allison Young hit a two-run single and Emilee Currie added two RBIs as the Wildcats leapt to an early 9-0 lead during the second inning. Coffin lost the second game as MDI defeated PIHS 7-5. Leading 2-0 at the top of the third, the Lady Wildcats allowed the Lynx four crucial runs and though Presque Isle scored three runs in the seventh, MDI had already reached their seven runs and maintained a two-run lead until the end. Caitlyn Esancy contributed two singles and an RBI for the Lady Wildcats, who are now 9-5 after the weekend.
The Wildcat baseball team left empty handed Saturday, falling to MDI 8-2 and 12-2. In game one, Matt Chasse doubled and singled for two of the Wildcats’ four game hits and Dean Amos contributed an RBI single.
Chasse took the loss and Ethan Braley stepped onto the mound for game two. With only six hits in the second game, Braley suffered the team’s eighth loss despite two singles from Isaac Lajoie and an RBI double from Steve Ford. The Wildcats are now 6-8.
Presque Isle defeated Mattanawcook 16-7, scoring 12 runs in the first inning at home Thursday as Brennen Shaw took the Wildcats sixth win. Leading off for PIHS was Braley, who hit two singles and a grand slam at the Wildcats’ first at-bat.
Another home run came from Ford, who doubled along with Eric Morris and Shaw.
The Lady Wildcats fell in their fourth season loss to Mattanawcook on Thursday 12-1. The Lynx took a 5-1 lead by the third inning and sent home two more in the fourth as Coffin struggled to keep Mattanawcook’s bats silent. Presque Isle’s two hits came from Jenna Stephenson, who singles and scored the team’s only run, and a single from Emilee Currie.
The Wildcat/Viking rivalry met on the baseball and softball diamonds May 19 in Caribou for the first time this season.
In baseball, Caribou defeated Presque Isle 12-4, as the Vikings stormed to a 5-2 lead by the third inning. Pat Thibodeau took the mound for the Vikings, doubling and singling in two RBIs. Thibodeau allowed 11 hits but, along with relief pitcher Chad McCarthy, held the Wildcats to three runs until the fifth inning, when Presque Isle scored its fourth and final run. Leading the Wildcat offense was Chasse, who contributed two singles, a double and two RBIs. Shaw singled twice but took the loss and Morris also had two singles for the Wildcats.
Scoring runs every inning but the third, the Vikings kept distancing themselves, with Cameron Anderson leading Caribou with a double, two singles and four RBIs. Two more runs came in off a Brandon Caverhill hit as the Viking recorded two singles and a double.
The Caribou and Presque Isle softball teams had a much closer match and, though the Lady Vikings led 5-4 at the top of the seventh, the Lady Wildcats went on a five-run rally to take the game 9-7.
Coffin took the win for Presque Isle and batted a double, single and four RBIs. Young added four singles and two RBIs while Currie had three singles.
Caribou kept Presque Isle scoreless for the first three innings as the Lady Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the third, but one of Caribou’s four total errors cost the Lady Vikings the game when Presque Isle drove in three runs at the top of the seventh to take the lead and eventual victory. Caribou’s last at-bat saw two runners home but left the Lady Vikings with a two-run deficit, moving them to their seventh loss this season.
