The Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge has been providing public education and recreational access since it first opened in 1998, when 4,700 acres of land were transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The refuge has since then grown to 5,252 acres and includes more than 2,400 acres in conservation easements.         While there is one full-time employee at the refuge, the future will hopefully increase that number to three as officials of the National Wildlife Refuge have set future goals of increasing public education and recreational access.
Friends of Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge are a main force in supporting the refuge.
