Grades 3 and 4 girls basketball
The Terriers and Black Bears hooked up as the grades 3 and 4 girls basketball kicked off the 2009 season. The two teams were knotted at 6-all through the first two sessions as neither team could put any distance between them and the opposition. Emily Wheaton caught fire in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of her game-high 18 points as the Black Bears pulled away for the 22-12 victory. Breanna Byrd and Sydney Kinney each had two points for the Black Bears, both scoring in the pivotal third quarter. Savannah Rodriguez paced the Terriers with six points. Julia Good knocked down a basket in each half for four points and Kasey Haley rounded out the scoring with two points.
Grades 3 and 4 boys basketball
North Carolina exploded for 14 second-half points to erase an early deficit and pick up the 18-14 win over Syracuse. Connor McManus spearheaded the comeback, scoring all of his team-high 10 points after intermission. Everett Zuras added four points, and the duo of Jordan Bonville and Tom Gorneault chipped in with two points apiece. William Bridges led the Syracuse attack with 10 points, while Kyler Caron and Tyler Levesque finished with two points each.
Duke and Arizona locked up in an epic defensive battle. Both teams did an extraordinary job protecting their baskets as points were at a premium throughout the game. Duke took a 4-0 lead into the break thanks to baskets from Cole Paterson and Erick Tompkins. RJ Gross sparked the Arizona rally, cracking open the lid on Arizona’s basket to finish with four points. Jason Dumais kept Duke on top with four second-half points of his own, including the eventual game winning basket late in the fourth quarter. Alex Churchill’s long range shot found the bottom of the net just before the buzzer sounded for Arizona, but it wasn’t enough as Duke held on for the 8-6 win.
Michigan used a strong first half to pick up the 25-12 win over North Carolina. Griffin Guerrette torched the nets for a game-high 23 points for Michigan, while teammate Jack Beaulieu added two points. North Carolina put four players in the scoring column, led by six points from Jordan Bonville. The trio of Connor McManus, Everett Zuras and Jonah Hudson chipped in with two points apiece.
Thanksgiving vacation activities
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will be offering additional programming during the week of November 23-27. In addition to daily open gym hours, which are 1-3 p.m. for elementary and 3-5 p.m. for middle/high school each day except Thursday, there will be a variety of events for children as follows:
Monday – Bowling at Northern Lanes on Main Street. Children in grades 1-8 may bowl from 10 a.m.-noon for $3, which includes the price of shoe rentals and bowling. Children must have their own transportation.
Tuesday – Wii Day at the center. Children in grades 4-8 can come try their luck in baseball, bowling, and more between 10-11:30 a.m. There is no fee or registration for this activity.
Dodgeball at the center. Children in grades 5-8 are invited to show up and dodge, dip, dive, duck and dodge all over the gym between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. There is no fee or registration for this activity.
Wednesday – Movie Day at the Braden. For the low price of $5, children in grades 1-6 can partake in a special movie day at the Braden on Main Street. The movie will start at 10 a.m. and the price includes the cost of admission, a small drink and a small popcorn. The snack bar will be available for additional fees.
Gym games at the center. Children in grades 1-6 can stop by the rec center between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to play capture the flag, rafterball and dodgeball. There is no fee or pre-registration required.
Thursday – Office closed.
Friday – Capture the Flag at the center. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Friday so parents can rest up from the madness of Black Friday. Students grades 1-6 can come back for more capture the flag, as this fun, fast-paced game will go on until 11 a.m.
Contest Day at the center. Don’t be in a rush to pick up the capture the flag crowd. Starting at 11 a.m., the competition will be fierce as kids battle in checkers, Connect Four and other games. The tournaments will finish up at 1 p.m., just in time for open gym or …
Dollar Day at the Indoor Pool. From 1-2:45 pm, all residents of Presque Isle can take part in general swim at the newly-renovated indoor pool for just $1.
Adult and evening programs
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has announced that its adult and evening schedule of activities is under way.
Coed volleyball will be held on Mondays from 7-9 p.m., men’s basketball will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m., and co-ed dodgeball will be held on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m.
All activities will be held at the William V. Haskell Community Center. The fee is $1 per person per night. Participants must be at least 18 years of age and out of high school to participate.
Grades 5 and 6 basketball registration
Registration for the grades 5 and 6 basketball program will be held at the William V. Haskell Community Center. Presque Isle residents may register beginning Nov. 30. Non-resident registration begins Dec. 9.
The program offers leagues for both boys and girls. Practices and games will be held weekdays after school at the community center. The registration fee is $18.

Youth open gym
The recreation department has begun its weekend hours for youth open gym.
Hours will be from 1-3 p.m. for elementary youth and from 3-5 p.m. for middle and high school students. These hours will be offered regularly each Saturday and Sunday.
Available will be a pool table, table tennis, bumper pool, foosball, board games, a lounge with TV and a gymnasium for basketball and other activities.
