LINCOLN — The Presque Isle golf team cruised to the Class B Penobscot Valley Conference championship Thursday afternoon and were also crowned the overall PVC champs in the combined Class B and C division.

With the win, the Wildcats qualified for the team state competition to be held Saturday at Natanis (Vassalboro).
“PVC’s went awesome,” Wildcat coach Jim York said. “I knew going into Thursday that we had a strong chance of walking away with one of the four qualifying spots, but they exceeded my overall expectations by winning the League Championship, and by qualifying first by 10 shots over Ellsworth.”
Despite boasting an 8-1 record coming into the PVC championship, the team records are irrelevant once the golfers hit the links, the coach said. For example, Hermon finished 9-0 on the season and did not qualify for states.
“People need to understand that it all depends on what you shoot on that one day,” York said. “As I mentioned before, consistency has been an issue, but on Thursday my guys shot like they should have all year, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Individual Wildcat results were: Evan Waddell, 79; Travis Dyer, 84; Jordan Hallett, 85; Alex Tuttle, 86; Adam Flynn, 86; Cody Merrill, 86; and Matt Freeman, 90.
In addition to qualifying for states as a team, four Wildcats —Waddell, Dyer, Hallett and Flynn — also qualified for the state individual tournament to be held Oct. 16.
“I believe our performance is just a testament to the hard work and dedication that Wildcat golfers have always shown,” York said.
