Triathletes compete in southern Maine event

Presque Isle natives Greg Palm and Mandy Putnam traveled downstate to compete in the Pumpkinman Triathlon Sept. 11.  The contest was a sprint distance race consisting of a 1/3-mile swim in Knights Pond, a 14.25-mile bike along the Eastern Trail, and three-mile run through the neighborhoods of South Berwick.
The Pumpkinman Triathlon Festival is a nationally-sanctioned competition which has grown to become the largest two-day triathlon event in the state and includes the state’s only Half Iron distance triathlon (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run).
Athletes came from across the country to participate in this year’s race.
This was the first triathlon for both Palm and Putnam. The 28-year-old Palm completed his race with a time of 1 hour and 37 minutes, while Putnam, 31, finished the course in 2:23.
